The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC or FTC) today issued a ruling against Epic Games regarding unintended purchases in Fortnite© The FTC accused Epic of using a number of tactics to encourage unintended in-game virtual currency purchases. These tactics allegedly resulted in millions of dollars in unauthorized consumer spending. According to the resolution adopted, the company must pay a fine of USD 245 million. This money will be used to reimburse the players affected by this conduct.

Parents whose children made unauthorized credit card purchases from the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018.
Fortnite players who earned in-game currency (V-Bucks) for unwanted in-game items (cosmetics, swords, battle passes, etc.) between January 2017 and September 2022.
Fortnite players whose accounts were suspended between January 2017 and September 2022 as a result of a dispute with their credit card company regarding fraud allegations.
The ruling also prohibits Epic Games from charging customers without their consent. Fortnite will no longer be able to prevent consumers who dispute fraudulent charges from accessing their accounts.
The Commission unanimously, by a 4-0 vote, upheld the complaint and the ruling against Epic Games. The company must pay and players who feel they were unfairly charged will receive a refund.
